STUDENTS VIE FOR FORTUNE SMALL BUSINESS COMPETITION With $8 billion worth of deals in 18 months, is InterActiveCorp the real thing or just another house of cards? New York, April 28, 2004This summer, talented business students will battle it out in the 2nd Annual FSB Student Showdown, FORTUNE Small Business' national student business plan competition. The competition will award a total of $65,000 in seed money, with $50,000 going to the first place winner. "After an overwhelming response to last year's contest, we're delighted to give students an opportunity to face off again in a national challenge," said FORTUNE Small Business Managing Editor Dan Goodgame. "We're looking forward to once again introducing our readers to some of the most promising business students and ideas in the country." FORTUNE Small Business has assembled an all-star judging panel. Among the judges are Kay Koplovitz, founder of USA Networks, Larry Morse, co-founder of the venture capital firm Fairview Capital Partners, Stephen Watkins, founder of Entrex, Verne Harnish, founder of Gazelles consulting firm and author of Mastering the Rockefeller Habits, Andrew Sherman, a partner at McDermott, Will & Emery and Rich Sloan, co-founder of StartupNation.com and Sloan Ventures. FORTUNE Small Business' Student Showdown team of judges will select eight semi-finalists who will then deliver oral presentations of their business plans. Three finalists will then move to the final round where one student from each of the top three competing teams will be able to question the student representing each of the other two teams in person about their business plans at the final awards event to be held in September. The judges will select the first, second and third place winners based on their performance in answering these questions. In addition to the first prize award of $50,000, FORTUNE Small Business will also award a second place prize of $10,000 and a third place prize of $5,000. To qualify, students must have won the top prize in their school's 2003-04 academic year internal business plan competition. See the complete rules for details and eligibility requirements.
