THE CHINA 100
FORTUNE's 2005 list of China's largest publicly traded companies; China Petroleum and Chemical still at No. 1

HONG KONG: 26 August 2005: The latest issue of FORTUNE, on newsstands on Monday 29 August, features the 2005 China 100 list. It got a lot harder to make FORTUNE's list of China's largest publicly traded companies this year, thanks to high-profile stock offerings and pumped-up oil revenues, writes FORTUNE's Margaretta Soehendro. The No. 100 company, Chongqing Iron & Steel, had 2004 revenues of US$1 billion, compared with the previous No. 100, which had revenues of US$724 million.

Old-economy companies-such as China Petroleum & Chemical (No. 1) and Petro China (No. 2)--continue to dominate. China Petroleum saw its revenues swell to US$71.4 billion, up from US$50.4 billion. Telecommunications companies also reported strong growth, with No. 3 China Mobile ringing up revenues of US $23.2 billion, compared with US$19.2 billion the previous year. Two big state-owned companies that went public last year--China Netcom (No. 7) and Ping An Insurance (No. 9)--crashed into the top ranks of this year's list.

The rest of the top ten were: China Telecom (No. 4), China United Telecommunications (No. 5), China Life Insurance (No. 6), Minmetals Developments (No. 8), and PICC Property & Casualty (No. 10).

But it wasn't all good news, writes FORTUNE. Some auto and tech companies had little or no growth and lost ground. FAW Car, for example, had flat revenues and skidded 22 places, to No. 88.

The complete China 100 list is available upon request and can be found at www.fortune.com and in the 5 September issue of FORTUNE on newsstands from Monday 29 August.
