Eric Pooley Named Managing Editor of FORTUNE New York, NY, February 8, 2005—Time Inc. named Eric Pooley Managing Editor of FORTUNE to succeed Rik Kirkland, who will step down after four years as the magazine's top editor. The announcement was made by Time Inc. Editor-in-Chief Norman Pearlstine and Editorial Director John Huey. Pooley, 45, is Editor of TIME Magazine's European, Middle Eastern and African editions. He was appointed to that position in September 2002. Based in London, TIME Europe, with a circulation of 555,000, is the region's largest and most successful international news magazine. Under Pooley's editorship, it has won a number of awards for design and photography, and for reporting on business, European affairs and international relations. In 2003 and 2004, Pooley was short-listed for the Editor of the Year Award by the British Society of Magazine Editors. After 26 years at FORTUNE, Kirkland, 53, expressed his desire to Pearlstine and Huey to step down as Managing Editor of FORTUNE and return to writing. He joined the magazine in 1978 as a reporter and researcher. He covered trade, fiscal policy, and the business lobby as a writer based in Washington, D.C., and also served four years as FORTUNE's European editor, based in London. Kirkland leaves FORTUNE in excellent shape, with a series of strong issues and with ad sales and newsstand sales up solidly in 2004 after some tough years. "Rick was a superb and popular editor who inspired excellent work," said Huey. Pearlstine added: "John and I both want to thank and praise Rik for his work in making FORTUNE the great magazine it is. We're absolutely delighted that his return to writing will continue to serve Time Inc. and its readers for years to come." "Norm and I selected Eric for the job because of his strong skills, not only as a journalist, but as a manager and magazine-maker of the first order. We are more than confident that he will build on the strong foundations that he inherits at FORTUNE," Huey said. Pooley joined TIME in July 1995 following a successful twelve-year career at New York magazine where he began as a freelance fact-checker in 1983, before moving up to senior editor, contributing editor and political columnist. He wrote many cover stories for the magazine on subjects ranging from politics, crime and urban affairs to sports, the arts and media. From January 2001 to September 2002, Pooley was Nation Editor for TIME in the U.S., overseeing the magazine's political, military and national-affairs coverage and helping to run its award-winning reportage on Sept. 11 and its aftermath as well as the war in Afghanistan. He reported and wrote the profile of TIME's 2001 Person of the Year, then—New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Previously, Pooley was TIME's Chief Political Correspondent, covering all aspects of American politics, including the 2000 Bush and Gore campaigns, key Congressional races, and an array of national issues, including foreign policy, education, poverty, and campaign-finance reform. During the Clinton impeachment of 1998, he co-wrote TIME's 1998 Person of the Year profile of Special Prosecutor Kenneth Starr, which won a Henry R. Luce Award for Best Story of 1998. In 1996, as TIME's White House Correspondent, Eric covered President Clinton's re-election campaign; his work on the White House beat was recognized with the 1996 Gerald R. Ford Prize for Excellence in Reporting. A magna cum laude 1981 graduate of Brown University, Pooley began his journalism career as a freelance reporter in East Germany. He is married to Pamela Newman Pooley and has two daughters, Megan and Caitlin.
