Gimbel joined the magazine in September 2004 as a general assignment writer and reporter. Since then he has penned feature stories on topics ranging from Iraqi reconstruction to ailing airlines, from Wall Street insider trading scandals to the first new railroad in 100 years. He has also spent time covering Hollywood, the Middle East and the travel industry.

In 2007, Gimbel was a recipient of the "NewsBios 30 Under 30" award, which showcases up-and-coming business reporters. He has also been guest on a variety of major television and radio outlets, including CNN, CNBC, Fox News, MSNBC and NPR.

Prior to FORTUNE, Gimbel worked at Newsweek, where he wrote more than 50 stories, including a cover story on the Martha Stewart criminal trial. Before Newsweek, Gimbel spent summers on the metro desks of The Palm Beach Post, The Cape Times (South Africa), and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. His work at The Palm Beach Post won two awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Gimbel has a M.S. in journalism from Columbia University and a B.A. in political science from Emory University, where he edited The Emory Wheel and was named "Reporter of the Year" by the National Scholastic Press Association and the Associated Collegiate Press. He lives in New York.
