John Brodie is an assistant managing editor at FORTUNE where he runs the front sections of the magazine as well as editing and writing features. In addition, he oversees the magazine's coverage of private equity, hedge funds, media, retail and the luxury goods business.

Brodie began his career as a staff writer at Spy before moving to Los Angeles in 1992 to become a senior editor at Variety, where he covered the TV and movie businesses. Five years later, he jumped to Premiere, and then became a senior writer at GQ based in L.A. During his five years at GQ, Brodie wrote multiple cover stories and numerous business pieces about Hollywood. He returned to New York in 2001.

In 2003, he left GQ to launch Best Life, a men's magazine published by Rodale that is one of the most successful startups of recent years. He joined FORTUNE in 2006.

Along the way he has managed to keep up a thriving freelance career, writing for The New Yorker, The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The New Republic, Vogue and Details, among others.

A cum laude graduate of the University of Virginia where he was an Echols Scholar, Brodie lives in New York City with his wife, Honor.
