FORTUNE

Senior writer Jon Birger joined FORTUNE in July, 2005. He covers investing, the financial markets, corporations, and real estate.

Prior to joining FORTUNE, Birger was a senior writer at Money from 2000-2005; a writer for Red Herring in 2000; and a senior reporter for Crain's New York Business from 1996-2000. He also was a reporter and editor at The Bond Buyer, and a reporter at the Keene Sentinel.

Birger won an Excellence in Financial Journalism award from the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and was a finalist for the 2001 Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism for his November, 2000 Money story "Glowing Numbers." He also won the New Hampshire Press Association's top award for feature writing in 1992, for "Two Dead Babies: Murder or Tragic Mistake," published by the Keene Sentinel.

He has a B.A. in history from Brown and an M.A. in history from the University of Pennsylvania.
