How does FORTUNE compile a list? What criteria have to be met? |
All U.S.-based public and private companies that file all or parts of their financial results with a government agency are eligible for the FORTUNE 1000 and the Global 500. Companies are then ranked according to revenue. Subsidiaries of foreign companies incorporated in the U.S. are excluded from the FORTUNE 1000.
To make FORTUNE's Fastest-Growing Companies list companies have to be based in the U.S., have been publicly traded for at least three years, and have a market capitalization of at least $50 million. At a minimum, firms had to show 20% annual growth over three years in revenue and EPS, and positive earnings in the latest quarter and for the last four combined at the time of publication. The final order derives from the sum of the rankings of growth in revenue, EPS, and total stock market return over three years.
FORTUNE Small Business' Fastest-Growing Small Companies list considers only public companies with $200 million or less in revenues for 2003 and a stock price greater than $1 per share. Companies were ranked on the basis of three criteria: earnings growth, revenue growth, and total stock return including dividends over the past three years. (Note: This year's list excludes real estate firms and banks, which became disproportionately represented as a result of historically low interest rates.)
Business 2.0's Fastest-Growing Technology Companies list consists of tech companies that have at least $50 million in revenue, have positive cash flow over the most recently reported 12 months, and have been publicly traded for at least three years. The companies are ranked using a combination of four financial criteria: growth in revenue, profit, and operating cash flow during the past three years, and the 12-month stock market return. (Cash flow growth counts for 40% of a company's ranking. Each of the other criteria counts for 20%.)
