Chris Albrecht is responsible for overall management of HBO, the world's largest premium television company, which operates multiple premium networks in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Latin America; he is also responsible for HBO's many other lines of business. Named to his current position in 2002, Mr. Albrecht served as president of HBO Original Programming since 1995 and continues to direct all day-to-day operations of both West and East Coast original programming for HBO, Cinemax, and HBO Independent Productions. With the addition of HBO Sports and HBO Film Programming, he oversees all programming for HBO and Cinemax services. Serving from 1990 to 1995 as president of HBO Independent Productions, a business unit dedicated to developing and producing comedy series for distribution on HBO and the broadcast networks, Mr. Albrecht was responsible for Martin, as well as Everybody Loves Raymond, the critically acclaimed series now in syndication. He joined HBO in 1985 as senior vice president, original programming, West Coast. Before joining HBO, he was with International Creative Management (ICM) for five years and was instrumental in signing such talents as Jim Carrey, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Billy Crystal, and Whoopi Goldberg. From l975 to l980, he was co-owner of the Improvisation nightclub in New York City. During those years, he was also a new talent management consultant for ABC in New York City. In 2003 Mr. Albrecht was honored with the prestigious National Cable Television Association Vanguard award for programming.

Christopher Bangle became director of design for the Development Division of BMW AG in 1992. After studying the liberal arts at the University of Wisconsin in the mid-1970s, Mr. Bangle earned a BS degree with honors at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 1981. While at the Art Center College, he was assistant designer at Hartkopf Associates from 1978 to 1981. He began as an interior designer at Adam Opel AG in 1981 and rose to deputy head of the Interior Design Studio in 1983. He joined Fiat Centro Stile in 1985 and served as head of the Exterior Studio until 1991, then as head of Exterior Design. He was director of Fiat Centro Stile/Design in 1992 before joining BMW in his current role later that year.

Billy Beane

Billy Beane's accomplishments as vice president and general manager of the Oakland A's include four straight post-season appearances; four straight seasons of at least 90 wins, including two 100-win campaigns; three American League West Division titles; and the second-most wins in baseball over the last four years. He has molded the A's into a perennial World Series contender without jeopardizing the organization's financial framework. Under his watch, the A's have compiled a 553-418 (.570) record over the last six seasons, the fourth-best record in baseball during that time frame. Mr. Beane joined the A's front office staff in 1990 as the club's major league advance scout. He was promoted in 1993 to the assistant general manager's position and became general manager in 1997. A first round pick of the New York Mets in the 1980 June Free Agent Draft, Mr. Beane played six major league seasons as an infielder, outfielder, and catcher for the Mets, Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, and Oakland A's; he retired as an active player in 1990. His executive talents and the organization's baseball philosophy was the subject of Michael Lewis' best-selling book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. Mr. Beane was named the Sporting News Executive of the Year in 1999 and earned Major League Baseball's Executive of the Year honors by Baseball America magazine following the 2002 season. In 2001, he was named to Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal's 40 Under 40 list.

Tim Bennett is president of Harpo Productions, Inc., the company that produces The Oprah Winfrey Show that is syndicated to 215 domestic markets and broadcast internationally in 117 countries. As program director and promotion manager at WLS-TV, an ABC O&O, he oversaw the syndication transition of The Oprah Winfrey Show from its 1984 origin as a half-hour local program, A.M. Chicago. Barbara Block received her Ph.D. from Duke University. Her research is focused on how large open fishes utilize marine environment. Prof. Block and her colleagues investigate ecology, physiology, and genetics of tunas, sharks, and billfishes. Lab research is interdisciplinary, combining biology, oceanography, engineering, and computational informatics. Prof. Block and colleagues at the Monterey Bay Aquarium have also established the Tuna Research and Conservation Center, the only facility in North America that conducts research on captive tunas. They are employing new techniques in wildlife telemetry and molecular genetics to directly examine the short- and long-term movement patterns, stock structure, and behavior of tunas and billfishes in the wild. The Block lab also engages in research at sea to understand the movements and physiological ecology of tunas and billfishes. She and her colleagues are conducting research with a new type of remote telemetry device, call pop-up satellite, and archival data storage tags. This technology's successful implementation has provided marine researchers with new tools for studying inaccessible marine vertebrates. Prof. Block is a recipient of the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, the MacArthur Award, and the Pew Foundation Conservation Fellowship.

Jonathan Blum is senior vice president, chief public affairs officer, of Yum! Brands, the world's largest restaurant company in terms of system units, with some 34,000 restaurants in 100-plus countries and territories, more than 850,000 employees worldwide, and more than $9 billion in total revenues, including company sales and franchise fees, in 2004. Mr. Blum serves on Yum! Brands' partner's council, which sets the corporation's overall strategy. In this role, he leads the company's global government affairs, nutrition, issues management, internal and external communications, diversity, community relations and corporate philanthropy. Before this appointment, Mr. Blum was vice president of public affairs for Taco Bell Corp., a Yum! Brands subsidiary. Before joining Taco Bell in 1993, Mr. Blum served as Asia-Pacific regional director for Ogilvy & Mather Public Affairs. He also was managing director of Ogilvy & Mather's public affairs offices in Chicago, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China. He is the only foreigner to have addressed China's Cadre Party Training School comprised of the country's 300 senior-most political leaders. Earlier Mr. Blum served as one of the youngest White House staff assistants to former President Jimmy Carter. He also participated in an LBJ Congressional internship on Capitol Hill.

Prof. Franz Brandstetter was born in 1945 in Hörmannsberg, Germany. He studied chemistry at Tübingen University and earned his doctorate there in 1974. After a one-year post-doctoral stint at Lomonosov University in Moscow, Prof. Brandstetter joined BASF's Plastics Laboratory in 1975. He became assistant to the board member responsible for research in 1984, head of the engineering plastics research department in 1985, head of the Styrene Copolymers business unit in 1993, and head of the Ultra-plastics business unit in 1999, before assuming his current role in 2000. He was appointed an honorary professor at Tübingen University in 1995.

William Bratton

William Bratton, appointed the 54th chief of the LAPD in 2002, oversees the operations of one of this country's largest major municipal law enforcement agencies. His responsibilities include supervision of 9,304 sworn and 3,055 civilian employees. Chief Bratton directs all patrol, investigative, and administrative operations, and administers an annual budget of $927 million. He initiated a major re-engineering of the LAPD, moving towards a decentralized police bureaucracy with stronger area commands that are more responsive to local community needs, and better trained and motivated police officers. His vision includes a comprehensive and assertive strategy for reducing crime, disorder, and fear in Los Angeles, with emphasis on gang-related crimes and the culture that creates it. Chief Bratton's 30-plus-year career in public and private sector law enforcement includes his 1994 appointment by Mayor Giuliani as the 38th police commissioner of New York City, where he reorganized the 50,000-person department with a $2.3 billion budget that resulted in a 39% decline in serious crimes and a 50% reduction in homicides. Among many honors, he holds the Schroeder Brother's Medal, the highest award for valor given by the Boston Police Department, which he served in the 1970s and 1980s in various supervisory capacities.

Susan Desmond-Hellmann is responsible for Genentech's medical affairs, regulatory affairs, product development, development sciences, and quality functions, as well as business development and strategic pipeline development. Dr. Hellmann joined Genentech in 1995 as a clinical scientist and was named executive vice president, development and product operations, in 1999, and later chief medical officer. Before joining Genentech, Dr. Hellmann was associate director of clinical cancer research at Bristol-Myers Squibb's Pharmaceutical Research Institute. While at Bristol-Meyers Squibb, she was the project team leader for Taxol. In addition to her work at Genentech, she is an adjunct associate professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She has also served UCSF as assistant professor, hematology-oncology. Board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, she completed her clinical training at UCSF. During her nine years of training in internal medicine and oncology, Dr. Hellmann spent two years as visiting faculty at the Uganda Cancer Institute studying AIDS and cancer. She also served two years in private practice before returning to research. Dr. Hellmann was named to FORTUNE's 2004 list 50 Most Powerful Women in Business. The same year, the Wall Street Journal listed her as one of its Women to Watch. Glenn Hutchins has spent his business career as a private equity investor in growth companies and large-scale buyouts. Richard Koshalek was appointed the fourth president of Art Center College of Design in 1999. Under his leadership, Art Center has embarked on a landmark program to invigorate the college's educational goals and expand both its programs and its campus. The college is also working with the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry on the expansion of Art Center's hillside campus and has also established a new South Campus facility in downtown Pasadena. He also conceived and led a collaborative design project entitled "LA Now" to focus creativity on downtown Los Angeles and its potential for future development. Mr. Koshalek is an international board member of the Wexner Center for the Arts and a board member of the American Federation of Arts. He was director of the Museum of Contemporary Art from 1982 to 1999. He previously served as director of the Fort Worth Art Museum; assistant director of the visual arts program of the National Endowment for the Arts; and as a curator, assistant curator, and exhibitions coordinator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.

He had acquired a controlling interest in Activision in 1990, with a goal of building the world's leading videogame company. Activision posted net revenues of $1.4 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2005. Based in Santa Monica, Calif., Activision is a leading worldwide developer, publisher, and distributor of interactive entertainment and leisure products. Before acquiring his controlling interest in Activision, Mr. Kotick was chairman and CEO of Four Kids Entertainment, Inc., a public company in the licensing and merchandising business. He was also a founder of International Consumer Technologies and acted as its president, as well as a director, from its inception in 1986 to 1995. Mr. Kotick currently serves as a board member of Yahoo. He is also a trustee for the Center for Early Education and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

He is board certified in internal medicine and is licensed to practice in Illinois and Maryland. After earning his medical degree at Johns Hopkins and completing his internship and residency at Stanford University Hospital, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship in molecular virology at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. As JDC president, Mr. Lombard, along with Earvin "Magic" Johnson, was presented with the City of Angels Corporate award at the Getty House Foundation's ninth annual City of Angels awards ceremony. Mr. Lombard currently serves as a board member for Initiative for a Competitive Inner City and on an advisory committee for Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn.

Mike Milken was the subject of a 2004 cover story in FORTUNE about how he has shaken up the medical community and saved lives. In 1972, three years after he began his Wall Street career, his mother-in-law was diagnosed with breast cancer and he began a search for medical solutions. He is now recognized for driving medical research toward cures and improved treatment outcomes for all serious diseases. In 1982 he co-founded the Milken Family Foundation, which has supported a broad range of education programs and inner-cities solutions, assistance to families of children with cancer, and research on pediatric neurology, nutrition, brain and breast cancers, and leukemia. His latest medical initiative is FasterCures, a Washington-based think tank dedicated to shortening the time it takes to make progress on the most deadly and debilitating diseases. Burt Rutan and his company, Scaled Composites, developed SpaceShipOne, which won Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine's Current Achievement award for the first privately funded manned space flight in 2005. Mr. Rutan served the U.S. Air Force from 1965 until 1972 as flight test project engineer at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., where his projects ranged from fighter spin tests to the XC-142 VSTOL transport. In 1972, Mr. Rutan became director of the Bede Test Center for Bede Aircraft in Newton, Kan. Two years later he formed the Rutan Aircraft Factory to develop light homebuilt aircraft. Through this company, the VariViggen, VariEze, NASA AD-1, Quickie, Defiant, Long-EZ, Grizzly, scaled NGT trainer, Solitaire, Catbird, and the world-flight Voyager aircraft were developed. In 1982, Mr. Rutan founded Scaled Composites to develop research aircraft; today the entity is the world's most productive aerospace prototype development company, developing new aircraft types at a rate of one each year. A few of the many professional awards Mr. Rutan has received are the EAA Outstanding New Design award for 1975, 1976, and 1978; the Presidential Citizen's Medal presented by Ronald Reagan in 1986; and the Lindbergh award by the Lindbergh Foundation in 2000. Mr. Rutan was named to Time magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2005.

Eric von Hippel, whose academic research examines the sources and economics of innovation, is a recipient of an honorary doctorate from Ludwig-Maximillians University in Munich, was a fellow at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and served as Sir Walter Scott Distinguished Professor at University of New South Wales in Australia. He has founded and participated in startup firms, and is a founder of the entrepreneurship program at MIT. He serves on numerous editorial advisory boards for academic journals and is an active researcher with numerous international collaborators. His most recent book is Democratizing Innovation (MIT Press, 2005). Mr. Von Hippel is known for pioneering research that has shown how product "lead users" are often the developers of successful new products, rather than the manufacturers as has been commonly assumed. This research, along with that of collaborators and others, is now triggering a major rethinking of how the innovation process works. The emerging view that users are at the center of the innovation process promises to trigger major changes in company business models and also in government policymaking on innovation-related matters. Mr. von Hippel has developed practical tools that enable product manufacturers to more efficiently participate in user-centered innovation processes.

Brenda Way received her early training at the School of American Ballet and Ballet Arts in New York. She is the founder and artistic director of ODC/San Francisco and creator of the ODC Performance Gallery, a community performance and training facility in San Francisco's Mission District. Ms. Way created ODC and an inter-arts department at Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music in the late 1960s before relocating to the Bay Area in 1976. She has choreographed some 70 pieces over the last 30 years. Among her many commissions are Remnants of Song (2003) for Stanford Lively Arts; Scissors Paper Stone (1994) for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; Western Women (1993) for Cal Performances, Rutgers University, and Jacob's Pillow; Ghosts of an Old Ceremony (1991) for Walker Art Center and The Minnesota Orchestra; Krazy Kat (1990) for the San Francisco Ballet; and This Point in Time (1987) for the Oakland Ballet. Ms. Way is a national spokesperson for dance, has published widely, and has received numerous awards and 20 years of support from the National Endowment for the Arts. She is a 2000 recipient of the prestigious John Simon Guggenheim fellowship.
