Fortune Global Forum: Next Generation Asia
CULTURAL PROGRAM

CONCURRENT THEMED EXPLORATION
Participants may select one of four guided outings that explore unique aspects of Hong Kong life and culture.

Tour to Hong Kong Heritage Museum
This beautiful museum, opened December 2000, explores the fascinating heritage and history of Hong Kong. In its galleries are the Collection of Chinese Antiquities, the Cantonese Opera Hall with magnificent costumes, and a very interesting display that illustrates the development and innovation of housing in Hong Kong over the past 100 years. Also on view in the museum are the many gifts received by Hong Kong from the various provinces in mainland China in celebration of the Handover.

Chinese Cooking Demonstration and Class
The Chinese Cuisine Training Institute is the world's largest Chinese cooking school. The institute, with its modern state-of-the-art facility, overlooks the new Cyber Port of Hong Kong. Participants will be given a guided tour of the institute followed by an enjoyable and tempting cooking demonstration. They will also be given a hands-on demonstration in the preparation of two classic Chinese dishes. Special aprons and certificates will be awarded to the guests.

Visit to Cathay Pacific Airways Headquarters Training Facilities and Flight Simulator
If participants have ever wondered what it feels like to fly a passenger jumbo jet, this is their chance to learn. They will visit Cathay Pacific Airways's state-of-the-art training facilities and be able to sit in a flight simulator cockpit. A flight instructor will guide them through take-offs and landings of huge commercial planes. Participants also will have the opportunity to observe Emergency Exit Training.

Cruise to Lamma Island
Participants will take a lovely cruise on a private Chinese "Junk," passing the famous Hong Kong skyline through Aberdeen Harbor. The group will travel to Lamma, rich in beautiful bays and lush green hills and the third largest of Hong Kong's 260 outlying islands. There the group will visit Sok Kwu Wan, a charming fishing village that has street markets, temples, beaches, and wonderful open-air restaurants lining the waterfront.

WEDNESDAY, 9 MAY
EARLY RISER OUTING
Early risers are invited to the outdoor terrace by the pool of the Grand Hyatt Hotel to learn Tai Chi. Tai Chi Master Lung Kai-ming will lead the participants through some of the exercises, which are beautiful and balletic in their slow movement and balance. They reflect Taoism's concept of stabilizing cosmic energy. Master Lung will explain the significance of each movement and demonstrate some of the techniques.

Chinese Martial Arts Association of Hong Kong
Lung Kai-ming, vice president of the Chinese Martial Arts Association of Hong Kong and the eldest son of Lung Chi-cheung, promotes North Shaolin martial arts. He was one of the founders of the Chinese Martial Arts Association of Hong Kong and plays an important role in organizing the Lion and Dragon Dance.

BREAKFAST AND GUEST SPEAKERS
Catherine Maudsley, an expert in Hong Kong history and culture, will discuss aspects of this fascinating city and its diverse multiethnic people. An authority on Chinese philosophy and religion, she will touch on these subjects as well.

Catherine Maudsley, educated in Canada, the USA, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Kyoto, holds MA and M.Phil degrees in Chinese fine arts and religion, and is the recipient of more than 25 awards, including research fellowships and gold medals. A fine-art consultant and private dealer of contemporary Chinese paintings, she has worked with private and corporate collectors worldwide. Her educational background and hands-on experience make her a unique figure in the world of Asian art. As a speaker, she has inspired audiences from organizations throughout the world, including the Chief Executives' Organization, International Forum of the Wharton School, Smithsonian Associates, World Presidents' Organization, and Young Presidents' Organization. She has lived in Hong Kong for 20 years.

Kai-Yin Lo, an internationally known jewelry designer, historian, author, and lecturer, will discuss the influence, appeal, and application of Chinese aesthetics and decoration in the western world. She will explore 'China Chic' as the term is understood today and how it was perceived in Europe from the 17th to early 20th century in areas of fashion, interior design, decorative objects, and the visual arts.

Kai-Yin Lo is known internationally as a jewelry designer who bridges the gap between precious and fashion jewelry. Her designs are acknowledged by international auction houses, such as Christie's and Sotheby's, as representative of the best from Asia. A recognized historian, author, lecturer, collector, and expert on several fields of Chinese art, Ms. Lo is the author of three well-received books: Classical and Vernacular Furniture in the Living Environment (1998), Bright as Silver, White as Show: Chinese White Ceramics from Late Tang to Yuan Dynasty (1998), and Living Heritage: Vernacular Environment of China (1999). Ms. Lo is currently at work on a film about Chinese civilization and is a sought-after speaker at international forums. She also serves on several cultural boards in Hong Kong. The show, Living Heritage: Vernacular Environment in China, curated by Ms. Lo, is on view at the China Institute in New York until 10 June 2001.

She studied history at Cambridge and London Universities, and also at Harvard Business School.

CONCURRENT THEMED EXPLORATION
Participants may select one of two guided tours.

1. Pearl and Jade Appreciation
Participants will go with an expert to visit one of the finest collections of jade and pearls. They will learn how to assess the quality of these gems, how to take care of them, and how to avoid costly mistakes when purchasing them.

2. Visit to Tea Museum and Calligraphy Appreciation
The Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware is located inside Hong Kong Park. Formerly the home of the British commander-in-chief, it was renovated to become a museum featuring a beautiful collection of teapots and bowls from the Tang dynasty to the present. Two young potters will show their award-winning pieces. A Chinese tea expert will give a talk on the subject and demonstrate how to make a tea properly. Participants will then have a chance to learn and practice the elegant art of Chinese calligraphy.

LUNCH AND GUEST SPEAKER
Adeline Yan Mah, best-selling author of Falling Leaves, will discuss her latest book, Watching the Tree, and sign copies as well. In this book, Dr. Mah focuses on the differences between Eastern and Western cultures and attempts to bridge the cultural divide by explaining what we can learn from ancient Chinese wisdom.

Lunch will be at the renowned China Club, known for its excellent collection of Chinese art as well as the outstanding cuisine.

Adeline Yeh Mah was born in Tianjin, China. She is the author of the best-selling book, Falling Leaves, which draws on the unusual circumstances of her life. Her mother died when Adeline was two weeks old and, in her Chinese family, she was considered to be a source of bad luck. When her father remarried, his new beautiful Eurasian wife proved to be a difficult challenge for the young girl. Falling Leaves recounts the story of Adeline's life. At fourteen she won a writing competition that convinced her father to send her to study in England. She attended medical school, graduated as a physician, and established a thriving medical practice in California, USA. Her newest book, Watching the Tree, will be the subject of her talk today. She is also the author of Chinese Cinderella.

CHARITY ORGANIZATION VISIT - JOCKEY CLUB REHABILITATION COMPLEX
A little-known fact about Hong Kong is that it is one of the world's leading cities for charitable organizations and giving. The city very much attempts to take care of its own. An outstanding example of its charitable organizations is the Hong Kong Jockey Club, which supports the Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex. Participants will have a tour of the inspiring and uplifting complex, which offers physical and occupational therapy for handicapped and blind adults and has a very successful vocational rehabilitation program.

Anna Wu, chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Council of the Hong Kong, SAR, will discuss the structure and workings of the government and give an overview of women's role in it and in Hong Kong.

Anna Hung-Yuk, currently chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commision, has served Hong Kong in many capactities. As a member of the Legislative Council from 1993 to 1995, she initiated the Equal Opportunties Legislation in 1994. Active in many of the territory's civic entities, she is committee member of various branches of the Independent Commision Against Corruption, nonexecutive director of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority and the Securities and Futures Commission, council member of Lingnan University, and the advisor to the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. Currently a member of the Radio Television Hong Kong TV Programs Advisory Panel, she previously served as chair of the Consumer Council (1997-99); co-chair of the Provisional Council on Reporductive Technology (1995-99); and director of the Hong Kong Mortgage Corp. Ltd. (1997-99).

Dorothy Ko, a cultural historian whose research focuses on the history of Chinese women and poetry, will discuss the hidden powers that Chinese women exercise in the family and the world beyond.

Dorothy Ko, a native of Hong Kong, is a cultural historian whose research focuses on the history of Chinese women, fashion, and poetry, She received her BA, MA, and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University and is now a professor of history at Barnard College, Columbia University. Fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and Japanese, she has also worked as a reporter, editor, and court interpreter in Japan, Hong Kong, and the USA. Ms. Ko is the author of Teachers of the Inner Chambers, a book on women poets in 17th-century China.

RECEPTION WITH MRS. TUNG
Mrs Betty Tung, wife of the HKSAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, will extend her warmest welcome to the participants at a morning reception. There will be a short and fascinating performance of Bian-Lian, the famous quick mask changing used in Sichuan Opera. A Fashion show offereing a private collection of ensembles that blend oriental patterns with modern fashion, sponsored by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, will follow. Blanc de Chine and Shanghai Tang will be among the seven Hong Kong designers featured.

CLOSING LUNCH
Participants of the Cultural Program will join the FORTUNE Global Forum Closing Lunch at the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre.

Created by Hong Kong's own David Tang and inspired by the stylishness of 1930s Shanghai, Shanghai Tang, the first Chinese brand name store, presents traditions in a fresh and contemporary way. You will find wonderful Chinese garments in silk, velvet, linen, and other fine fabrics, as well as leather products, silverware, T-shirts, stationery, and accessories. All designs are original and unique to Shanghai Tang.

TOUR OF CHI LIN TEMPLE
Chi Lin Nunnery is a Chinese temple built in the Tang Dynasty style that reflects the glory and art of ancient Chinese architecture. Professor David Lung and Ven Shi Weizhoug, abbess of the nunnery, will give participants a tour of this unusual temple.
